The defeat in November 2012 of Proposition 37 in California was viewed as a keystone ballot initiative in the movement, now nationwide, that is advocating for the labeling of genetically modified (GMO) food products. The initiative in California was hardly considered a "high water mark" for those advocating for such labeling. There are numerous efforts afoot across the nation attempting to achieve the same ends as those pursued in California.
