Washington Insights Update

This month, Congress is focused on clearing its agenda prior to the month-long August recess. Both the House of Representatives and the Senate continue to hold appropriations hearings, attempting progress towards passage of legislation to fund the government past September 30. In addition, Congress is attempting to address funding for transportation programs which expires at the end of July, as well as moving legislation to address the drought in the Western United States, particularly California.

Analysis of Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee Recommendations

This week, the Departments of Agriculture (USDA) and Health and Human Services (HHS) released the Scientific Report of the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC).

Final Menu Labeling Rules Released by FDA

On Novemer 25th, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration released two final rules for menu and vending machine labeling. The long-awaited rules, which stem from provisions in the Affordable Care Act, take broad latitude in the types of food items and establishments that will be covered.

 

FDA Releases Revised FSMA Rules

On September 19, 2014, FDA released four supplementary notices of proposed rule-makings (SNPRMs), revised versions of four of the proposed rules it released previously as part of its implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) of 2011. The agency committed to revise the originally proposed rules after receiving significant feedback from industry stakeholders about various aspects of each rule.
