Don Fox, CEO of Firehouse Subs, discussed how to build a high-performing restaurant business. Continual growth is  imperative. There are key principles to be followed, including  branding, culture, mission and values. Implementing  these principles requires a clear understanding throughout  the organization of what they are and why they are important.  Success also requires strong leaders who lead by  example, delegate and provide tools, hold others accountable  and display optimism.

Key Takeaways

Businesses must grow to survive. In the restaurant business, growth is necessary for survival.  It takes a passion for growth to ensure a business is not  overwhelmed by inflation and other outside influences.

"Growth is what's imperative . . . you're either growing or dying."−Don Fox

Firehouse Subs is a perfect example. Since its inception, Firehouse has grown continually, from one restaurant in  Jacksonville, Florida, in 1994, to 745 today in 40 states  and Puerto Rico.

If there's one thing I learned from working in the foodservice industry for the past 26 years, it is the importance of building customer relationships. Establishing strong relationships with your customers is only possible if you have a thorough understanding of their business and needs. Staying in tune with the issues your customers are facing will better enable you to be in the position to provide solutions to their problems.
