About Winning the Gold & Silver Plate Awards

According to a Hotel F&B magazine article, the Gold Plate Award "is, arguably, the most prestigious in the [foodservice] industry."

It is the only award where the winner is selected by a jury of peers comprised of past Silver and Gold plate winners, editors of the national foodservice press and other respected industry experts. These professionals consider nominees based not on local or regional biases, rather, they evaluate on criteria of excellence that includes creativity, accomplishment, leadership, mentoring and outstanding service to community.

Accolades from Past Winners

Hundreds of professionals have been named best-in-class Silver Plate winners over the past sixty years with one Gold Plate winner being honored each year since the awards program began in 1954. Just a few past Gold Plate winners include: Richard Melman (Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, Inc.), Ralph Brennan (Mr. B's/Bacco/Red Fish Grill), Jon L. Luther (Dunkin' Brands), Sally Smith (Buffalo Wild Wings, Inc.), Ruth Fertel (Ruth's Chris Steak House) and Ronald Shaich (Panera Bread).

"The Silver Plate Award? It's recognition by your peers. When I look at who has won this award over the past 30 years, it's everybody in the business I admire and respect," said 2006 Gold Plate winner Elizabeth Blau, CEO of Blau + Associates, a strategic restaurant planning and development company based in Las Vegas, Hotel F&B magazine reported.

"One of the things I learned…seeing all of the challenges that this industry has…we continue to move forward and we've got some great new ideas," said James Broadhurst, 2014 Gold Plate winner and  chairman of Eat'n Park Hospitality Group. "And when I look at a lot of those [Silver and Gold Plate] winners of the new concepts and new things that are happening in this industry, it's something we can be really proud of. I'm just very proud of the recognition that I've received."

After winning the Gold Plate Award in 2009, Buffalo Wild Wings CEO Sally Smith said "I am extremely honored to have been chosen as the recipient of this award, particularly from the pool of such accomplished industry leaders and Silver Plate winners."

He had just been awarded the 62nd Annual IFMA Gold Plate for overall foodservice industry excellence and did not have a speech prepared. The reason why speaks to how much respect Mr. Taherian has for the industry he has served for more than 30 years.  

Rafi Taherian Receives Foodservice Industry's Top Honor

CHICAGO, May 23, 2016Rafi Taherian, associate vice president, Yale Hospitality at Yale University, was named the 2016 Gold Plate Award winner by the International Foodservice Manufacturers Association (IFMA) on May 21 at Revel Fulton Market in Chicago. Mr. Taherian was nominated by Basic American Foods, JL&A Communications and Sysco and was one of nine outstanding operator executives who were eligible for the award this year after receiving the IFMA Silver Plate Award in March. Mr. Taherian represented the Colleges and Universities Silver Plate Category.
