Kansas State - Jacy Sawyer Lucas 3 - 2

Jacy Lucas is a 2013 IFMA International Gold & Silver Plate Society internship stipend recipient. She attends Kansas State University and is majoring in Dietetics. Find out what she had to say when we asked her a few questions about her foodservice stipend and future career.

What is your major & what made you decide on it?
I currently am a Junior majoring in Dietetics. I decided Dietetics was the right major for me after I watched a documentary on obesity freshman year. The documentary left me wanting to help people through food and nutrition.

Food regulations are always changing in foodservice, and so is nutrition news in general.

How has your stipend enabled you to pursue a career in foodservice?
This scholarship is helping me pay for my tuition, along with motivating me to work hard and finish my degree.

What was your first job in foodservice?
My first job in foodservice is actually the job I hold now at Kramer Dining Center, as an Undergraduate Management Assistant.

What would you say is your "dream job" after you graduate?
My dream job is to work as a Registered Dietitian either at a school or fitness center. I want to impact others through food and nutrition, hopefully preventing obesity and problems that come a long with a bad diet.

Kansas State - Jacy Sawyer Lucas 2 - 2Do you have a mentor?  How have they helped you?
I feel that all of my professors at K-State have been a mentor for me. Each professor has in different ways impacted my learning and have all been there when I needed advice, or help in a certain subject.

What are some of the challenges students like you face in today's world of foodservice?
Food regulations are always changing in foodservice, and so is nutrition news in general. Being up to date with the new information is one challenge we will all have to face.

What have you learned that you will apply to your career?
I will apply all of the courses I have taken at K-State, along with the management skills that I have learned from my job.

What is your favorite meal?
I definitely can not pick just one favorite meal, but I love any breakfast food!
