Comment Period Open for "Smart Snacks in School"

The Obama administration released its long awaited nutritional guidelines for snack foods sold in schools. The comment period is open for 60 days before the rules are finalized for the next school year. Farm Bill Insights

The U.S. Senate passed a bipartisan Farm Bill on June 21. Over 70 amendments were considered. Some that were accepted include amendments to help organic growers get crop insurance, require the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation (FCIC) to study the feasibility of establishing a food safety insurance program, establish a pilot program to support healthy foods for the hungry and require national dietary guidelines for pregnant women and children.

FDA Releases Long-Awaited FSMA Regulations on Preventive Controls (Human Food) and Produce Safety Standards

After a number of false alarms and delays, FDA released on January 4, 2013, the most significant proposed regulations implementing the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) to date. The release comes on the two-year anniversary of President Obama's signing of FSMA.
